You must register if annual turnover is $75,000+. Ride-share drivers (Uber, DiDi) register from dollar one — no threshold. Once registered, you must lodge BAS every period even if your GST is zero.

Records You Need

  • Tax invoices for all business sales (GST collected)
  • All supplier invoices with ABN and GST amounts
  • Payroll records — wages paid and tax withheld
  • Bank statements and payment summaries
  • Fuel purchase receipts for fuel tax credit claims

Late BAS Penalties

The ATO charges $222 per 28-day period a BAS is overdue, up to $1,110. Interest on unpaid tax also accrues. Using a registered agent gives you extended due dates and systematic lodgement.

Common Questions

BAS Return FAQ

A Business Activity Statement (BAS) reports and pays your GST, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments, and other taxes to the ATO. You must lodge a BAS if you are registered for GST. Businesses with $75,000+ turnover must register. Ride-share drivers must register from dollar one. Most businesses lodge quarterly.
Self-lodgement quarterly due dates: 28 October (Q1), 28 February (Q2), 28 April (Q3), 28 July (Q4). Registered tax agents receive extended deadlines — typically 4 weeks after self-lodgement dates. We always lodge before the deadline so you avoid ATO penalties.
Fuel tax credits allow businesses to claim back fuel excise included in fuel prices for eligible business activities — heavy vehicles on public roads, off-road vehicles in mining or agriculture, and machinery and equipment. We check eligibility and include all eligible FTC in your BAS.
The ATO charges Failure-to-Lodge (FTL) penalties of $222 per 28-day period overdue (up to $1,110 for small businesses). Interest on unpaid tax also accrues. Using a registered agent gives you extended due dates, reducing this risk significantly.
Yes, if your GST turnover is under $75,000 and you choose the Annual GST Option. You report and pay GST annually while paying PAYG instalments quarterly. This reduces lodgement frequency significantly. We assess whether this suits your business situation.
